On Self Healing:
By William E. Steinman:
October 10, 2005:

In a recent essay I spoke of self healing and promised to get into the how of it. I have some experience in this arena which came out of a very scary experience with a deadly drug called Vioxx. Willie Gaffer wrote three essays about that which are still posted in the Forum. They are "Thoughts on Self healing," "Self Healing Supporting Theory," and "Self Healing, Theory and Practice." In that debacle, I believe I did manage to heal a heart fibrillation that was cause by Vioxx. Since then, I have continued to learn and I have good reason to believe I can do even better.

Self healing really does have an element of faith about it. Christians will remember this quote from their bible. "Had ye but faith, ye could move mountains." Well that is true. JC wasn't just whistling Dixie when he said that. It really is possible to make profound changes in the physical universe. Faith healing does work. The important thing is, you must believe it is possible. If you cannot make yourself believe it, it is not possible.

One of the problems I had with this at first was my inability to get to the point of believing. I had a theory of how the universe worked, but I had no conformation. Now I have received that conformation from the scientific community. Their findings substantiate my theory, that the universe is an energy field and nothing else. In addition, I have my previous experience of healing from the Vioxx debacle, so I now know. Self healing results from a concentration of will directed energy. It has nothing at all to do with any kind of imaginary divinity. Nor does it have to do with deserving. That will probably tick off a few pious do-gooders, but it is true. Self healing only has to do with understanding and will.

Now that I know, I can divide my efforts into two channels or directions. One direction is to willfully direct the universal energy field in order to heal this macular degeneration vison problem I have. I believe that is possible and it is most important, because I have much more to say in my philosophy. In order to say it, I must write. In order to write, I must be able to see. My second goal or direction is to learn more about this universal field and to understand your and my place in it, how do I fit and how does everyone else fit.

The self healing effort will be an ongoing thing. That means there will not be specific times I will pay attention to it. It will be always on my waking mind and the effort will be continuous. Whenever I pause, the problem and the effort come to mind and I consciously reenforce it. In an earlier meditation I tried to set it up like a machine that continues to run for a time without my direct attention. It always has my indirect attention. Then, when occasion permits, my direct attention reenforces it and keeps it running.

Does it sound like hocus pocus? It is not. It is just a way of concentrating energy. It is about visualizing what is going on. First let me say what I believe must happen in my body for the healing to occur. My vision problem is caused by the degeneration of the cones in the macula area of my eye. This whole area is only about one centimeter in diameter. It is extremely small but in this area reside about 7 million cone type light receptor cells. In this area, in my case, are a large number of damaged cells that must be replaced or repaired. One way to make that repair is to take the stem cells from my own body and turn them into cones. Then I can implant them in the macula to replace the damaged cells. That sounds like it would be a straightforward procedure if I was a genius neurosurgeon.

I must use another method of repair. It starts with visualization at first. Later, when I get more in tune with the universal energy field, visualization may become unnecessary or even counterproductive. For now, in the eye are these little red, green, and blue guys that let me see what I'm doing. Okay. If you zoom in, so to speak, you can picture this macula area as something like a circular flower garden with 7 million little red, green, and blue flowers growing in it. From that visualization it is one really beautiful garden. Well, a garden must have a gardener. In fact, a garden with that many (7 million) flowers must have a number of gardeners. So my job is to put these gardeners to work. They must remove the dead flowers and replace them with live flowers and they must pay attention to color. They must always replace with a like color, lest the pattern be skewed.

So, in each eye, I visualize a bunch of busy little tiny gardeners pulling and planting. They are supported by a whole gang of tiny entities who take raw stem cells in he nursery and teach them to be cones. Then they take these seedling cone flowers up to the macula gardeners for planting. They also take dead cone flowers and other trash out to the blood stream where it gets hauled to the liver and put in the Dumpster. This whole process is already in motion and the little guys stay busy. I simply reenforce it every chance I get. Time will tell if I'm full of crap or not.

This effort will take a long time to bring about. While it is going on, I will also be looking into other angles of approach. I think that is only reasonable. It is very important for me to retain and maintain my eyesight. The more avenues I can find to manage that, the more likely will be my success. There is one thing I am sure will happen if it is not gong on already. I believe the medical community will begin doing stem cell experiments in the human eye. When they do, I expect it to work just as I have outlined above. Of course, the first experiments will be with volunteers who are legally blind due to macular degeneration.

In these volunteers, stem cells will be extracted from the patient's body. At the same time, some cone cells will be extracted from the perimeter of the macula. These will be mixed in a way that will allow the stem cells to see the pattern of what they must become. Once the cells are growing in a laboratory medium they can be introduced directly into the fovea centralis where they will continue to grow. As they grow, they will stimulate more growth and eventually the macula will be restored. Instead of macular degeneration we will witness macular regeneration. Once this method is perfected, and it will be, it could also become a cure for what we call color blindness.

That is just one area that I am sure will eventually be fruitful. I intend to check out some of the outfits that are working on these problems. If I find they are doing this stem cell work, I will ask for details. If they are not, I will suggest that they begin immediately. I will also try to find other areas of research, but to me, the stem cell avenue seems the most promising.

In my second goal I am hoping to learn more and finally get in touch with the real consciousness of humanity. This is what Jung called the collective unconscious. I believe that collective unconscious is directly related to this universal energy field. What this comes down to is we cannot be separate. It is not possible for anyone to be separate. You an I can be thousands of miles apart, but we are never separate. There is only one and it includes us. Part of the way I approach understanding that is through a form of meditation. The focus of this meditation is to ascend to the level of consciousness that will bring me to a true awareness of the whole body of consciousness. My goal is to know and experience the oneness of mankind and this universe. I'll get to the how of that in another essay which I will call, "Getting There."
