Let's take a look at politics. Start with the democrats. The democratic party is a careening out of control vehicle without a driver. It is dangerous when the membership is not inept. They have no mission, they have no leader, they have no philosophy. Take a look at what the democrats did in the last national election. For the top job they picked a single issue war hero. Then, knowing that attorneys are despised of men, they picked a VP candidate who is even despised by attorneys. They picked a personal injury attorney.
On the other hand, the republican party does not need a leader, so Bush or anyone else will do as a symbol. What they do have is a mission and a philosophy. The two are identical. The philosophy and the mission are to make sure the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor while glossing it over with pretensions of religious piety. The republicans also have better goon squad liars, like the swift boat scumbags. The best the democrats can come up with to match that are blowhards like Kennedy.
So, what are the democrats planning for next time? "More of the same!" Kennedy says it best. His man is Kerry, the guy who blew it last time. They need an FDR to get the country out of its mess and they show up with Kerry. Kerry will try to get right back down in the gutter with the republicans. Might as well go down in flame, I suppose.
In the gutter, the republicans are unbeatable. It's their natural habitat. They take to it like a hog takes to mud. They are better at lying, they are better at deceit, they are better at subterfuge, they are better at any kind of underhanded methods you can think of. They live for that sort of thing. The democrats usually bungle those things just as they bungled the play with Hill and Thomas.
On the other hand, the republicans continuously leave the high ground open for anyone who wants it, but the democrats are to dumb to seize it. Why is this? It is because, being first and foremost politicians, they do not trust the people. They believe the people will find the truth unacceptable. So they lie to them, but they cannot do it as well as the republicans. The republicans make their lies convincing to the rabble. The democrats are unable to do that. Realizing that, for goodness sake, why not tell the truth?
Tell the people they need to make some sacrifices. Tell the people there is not any free ride. Tell them, so long as they abdicate their responsibility, they have no rights. Tell them we need a military draft to get enough people in place to clean up the Iraq debacle. Tell them we have to take the terrorists seriously. It is a war and we must have guns and people to win the war. We cannot have guns and butter too. That is a crock of bull. We will have to tighten out belts and make some sacrifices, just as we did in WWII.
Sooner or Later we are going to have to face the music. We cannot have our hedonistic lifestyle as usual and fight an international war on terrorism. We are stretched much too thin and we are putting our troops at great risk just to avoid looking at the truth. Doesn't anyone wonder why the army cannot recruit enough men? That is not an unrelated item. Our kids are not dumb. Our kids and their parents don't want them to get killed fo nothing. In Iraq and Afghanistan, that is what is happening. Our kids get killed and the situation does not change. That is a tragic waste of human life and potential.
We must take this seriously and put in enough resources to get the job done. It is going to take a lot of resources and troops for a very long time. Democracy is not going to sprout overnight in a region that has known only primitive repressive governments for centuries. We need only look at Germany after WWI to see what will happen. We installed a caretaker government there and turned our backs. A few years later we were facing Hitler. It took the second time around and the Marshal plan for us to get that one right. Now we are repeating history instead of learning from it. The problem is, this time we will not survive the errors. If we do not deal effectively with the terrorists soon they will destroy us. We need someone in power who understands that.
There were times in our history when the democrats knew how to win the hearts of the people and how to lead us away from disaster. Roosevelt did it and then Truman did it. Later Kennedy did it. What did they do? Although all were politicians they made their appeals to the voter's sense of duty and nobility. These men were far from perfect, but they knew how to make the people believe in something bigger than themselves. They made us believe in destiny. They made us strive for greatness. So, why not try to do that? Try to tell the truth and lead us.
If the rabble do not respond to the truth they deserve what
they get, but let's find out. Do what FDR and Kennedy did. Instead
of appealing to their base ignoble instincts, appeal to their
higher natures, their sense of decency, their sense of destiny.
Give them leadership instead of pap. If you honestly try it and
it does not work it will be time to go back to the old time worn
shabby methods. Then, let the country go to hell. For myself,
I will undertake to protect my grandchildren as best I can, even
to the extent of constructing a citadel. My own kids cannot depend
on me to protect them too. They will have to be in the ramparts
with me.
