Gaffer Variety:
The Election V067:
By Willie Gaffer:
Dogs don’t vote. They have better sense than that. It was awful, just awful. Each election we see more smut, slime, filth, and evil behavior than the last time. It seems there is no limit to the behavior of these people. They will go to any length to malign their opponent and bring disgrace unto themselves. At last it’s over.
Should we thank Gord it’s over? Not so fast! If you have not noticed, I have. The contemptuous, disgusting, filthy political ads, that we thought we were done with, are already starting over. They are mild now and, to some people, too subtle to notice, but they are there. Very soon, they will not be subtle at all. They will get more and more strident and ugly for the next two years. It never ends and it probably never will.
So what about this election? What was the result? The media
pundits are saying there was profound change. The Dumbocrats got control of
both houses. So what? What does that mean? I say it means nothing. Nothing much
will change, because nothing at all will be done about the three major issues
that face
On global warming, or any other issue, most people, including most politicians, will strive to believe or pretend to believe whatever will make it easy for them to do nothing. It does not matter whether they are Dumbocrats of Republicrumbs. If you deny a threat exists, you can comfortable stick your head in the sand or go out and play golf. Those who acknowledge there might be a threat, are almost compelled to learn more about it to see what they can do about it. That takes effort. It’s better to deny reality so we will not have to get off of our asses and do something. As Demosthenes once said, “A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true.”
A few things did happen as a result of this election, but we must wait to see if those things will have an effect. From the standpoint of the White House, George finally had to face the truth. A lot of people do not agree with him. I suspect one result of that is it means the end of the line for that person, Karl Rove. He was supposed to save George, but he did not do it. In fairness to Rove, how do you save a person from himself?
Another White House thing is Rumsfeld is out. George
accepted his resignation George is trying to varnish over Rumsfeld’s
ouster. He says they have been working on it for weeks. Sure! Just one week
ago, George said Rumsfeld will stay the course, or something like that. Is that
a flip-flop or a flop-flip? I lost track. It’s sure a flop for Rummy.
Robert Gates will be the new SOD. He has been a CIA chief. We must wait to see
if that will make a real difference in
In fairness to Rumsfeld, he has offered to resign several
times. It was not Rumsfeld but George who could not see the obvious. I think
Rummy is completely worn out. He has been in the line of fire right from the
git-go. Everyone in
What else? Hastert is out as speaker of the house of course.
I don’t think anyone will weep over that, not even Republicrumbs. He was
an embarrassment to them too. It seems Nancy Pelosi will be the new speaker.
She will be the first woman to be speaker of that (august?) body. It’s a
new concept for the
Then there is that wild card Lieberman. He ran as an independent and won. The pundits are stumbling over their words trying to explain that. How could a guy who looks like a mild mannered Jewish tailor beat the best offerings of the two big machines? Really, there is nothing to explain. The voters like Joe because he represents them fairly.
Other than that, the Dumbocrats will ram through a minimum
wage bill and pretend they have done something great and noble. That’s
about all they will do. There will not be any great change of direction. The
more things change the more they stay the same. Oh well, sigh.
