Steinman for Governor:

Part 012, Finale:

By William E. Steinman:

November 6, 2006:

This is the last essay of my series on Steinman for Governor. When I began this series, I was hoping to find and announce a running mate for the post of Lieutenant Governor. Although it is late in the game, I have finally found the right mate in the person of George Woodstein. This is a man who, like myself, thinks the great state of Michigan deserves better than business as usual two bit political hacks. I urge you to write in George Woodstein for the post of Lieutenant Governor.

I am posting this essay on Monday November 6 and the election is tomorrow, November 7. The intent was never to get elected. I know the odds on that are worse than the odds on winning the Power Ball Lotto. My goal was to wake a few people up and bring the real problems of Michigan to the attention of whoever reads these essays. If I succeed in making one person look a bit harder at the chaos in Lansing, I have done well. In any case, I will not be disappointed. I have done what I could.

Now, I did not cover all of the issues that are problematic in our state. I simply covered the major ones. There are other things that impact and degrade the quality of life of all or most of our citizens. I can cite telephone soliciting and spam as examples. The do not call registry was supposed to stop telephone soliciting.  It did not, because there are too many dishonest exemptions. As a very gross dishonest exemption, I can cite the exemption for political hacks to invade our privacy with their garbage campaigning. Even for the non-exempt calls, complaints fall on deaf ears. So far as I can tell, our government makes no effort whatsoever to follow up on the complaints. Nothing is done to the perpetrators. They just continue.

For example, by now everyone has received a large number of those annoying recorded messages from the telephone thugs. “This is a very important call for, fill in the blank.” Presently, the political hacks have become the worst perpetrators of these intrusions. It does not matter that the phone is on the do not call registry. If I were Governor of Michigan, I would ask the Michigan Legislature to pass a law forbidding automated telephone soliciting and I would ask the attorney general to enforce it. There would be a $1000.00 fine for the first offense and a $5,000.00 fine with two years in jail for the second offense. The third offense would get the three strikes maximum penalty of life in prison. If people prove themselves to be habitual offenders, they should get no mercy.

Spam, of course, is a major problem and a major cost for companies who depend on communication via computers. The dishonest internet service providers (ISP’s) and ignorant politicians claim it is impossible to investigate or stop spam. The politicians are just ignorant, but the ISP’s are not. They are simply lying. It is possible to stop spam. Effective anti-spam tools could be put in place, but the ISP’s make money by providing facilities for spammers. That is the truth.

There are many smaller issues that affect our quality of life. The government itself causes some of them. I have pointed up one such problem in our Secretary of State’s office. Whatever their source, an effective leader would discover them and deal with them one by one. I don’t think Michigan has ever had an effective leader. I have not heard of a politician in the last 50 years who I would trust with my wallet. The next four years will be no different. You will never get change so long as you continue to think in the either-or terms of Dumbocrats or Republicrumbs. I am not too hopeful about you rabble changing anytime soon.

As I have said, I have yet to meet a true thoughtful independent voter. Many people pretend to be independents, but when you talk to them it only takes a few minutes to realize they are spouting the Republicrumb party line or the Dumbocratic party line. The party power players devise these party lines to keep the rabble engaged and working. The Republicrumb and Dumbocrat lines are more notable for their similarities than for their differences.

As to me getting elected, it would not be good for me anyway. I’m 76 years old and not in super health. In addition, Mrs. Gaffer warned me, if I happen to win she is not going to Lansing. She will stay right her, thank you very much! If I want to see her, I will have to commute. I’m not too worried about that. From what I’ve seen, a person who was willing to work could do what Engler and Granhom did and spend no more that one day a week in Lansing. I don’t see that DeVos would be any different.

This is one of the things I hoped you would notice. There is no difference! If you wasted time watching the debates between these two you must have noticed that. I deliberately did not watch, but it did not help. The media shoved it in my face the next day. What a treat, to see two so-called adults trying to out shout and out defile each other. If kids behaved that way we would send them to their rooms.

So, you will do what you do in spite of that childish behavior and I will vote for myself as a matter of conscience. That won’t matter either, because my bet is, my vote will not be recorded. I suspect most of the people who work in election precincts belong to one or the other or the two major parties. They will have a vested interest in making write in voting difficult or even impossible. You must follow the rules exactly and don’t expect to get any help. Either they will find a reason to disqualify my ballot or they will treat it as a joke. Either way, it will not be counted.

Now, I am finished with this nonsense. For anyone who cares, I have made my point. In the following weeks I will engage in a different mission. I have set myself the task of trying to solve some of the problems involving our energy dependencies. To do that, I must learn a great deal. As I learn, I will be posting my study notes in this column for anyone who is interested.
