William's Picnic Beans:

Here is a great recipe for tasty baked beans. It's an all day task, but everything can be done on the day before your feast. You can serve these beans hot or cold. They are great either way.
What you need. What you do.
1 cup dried great northern beans. 1 cup dried red kidney beans. 1 qt. water. Wash beans and soak overnight.
1 Qt. water. 3 tsp salt. 1 tsp ground black pepper. Drain beans. Put beans in a 5 qt. pot. Add water salt and pepper. Simmer for 2hours.
1/4 lb. bacon. While beans are cooking, cut bacon into 1/4 inch pieces. In a skillet, fry bacon on medium heat until beginning to crisp.
1 cup chopped cooking onion. 1/2 cup chopped celery. 1 cup chopped green pepper. Add onions, celery and green pepper to skillet and saute until onion is tender.
Add contents of skillet to bean pot and continue cooking, uncovered to evaporate the excess liquid.
1/2 tbsp. dry mustard. 1/2 tsp. curry powder. 1 tbsp. brown sugar. 1/4 cup tomato catsup, 2 tbsp. molasses. 1/4 cup Open Pit barbecue sauce. 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce. Add remaining ingredients to bean pot and continue cooking until. quite thick.
Transfer beans to a baked bean crock or suitable container for final baking.
Bake beans at 350 deg. uncovered for 2 hours, more or less depending on the consistency you desire.

Hot buttered, home made corn bread is a great complement to these beans. Here's how.

Place 1 cup all purpose flour, 1 cup corn meal, 2tbsp. baking powder, and 1 tsp. salt in a large mixing bow. Mix thoroughly. Add 2 eggs, 1 cup milk, and 4 tbsp. corn oil. Stir to mix. Do not over stir. Pour the dough into a 9 x 9 butter cake pan. Bake at 400 deg. for 20 to 25 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.

If you like options, try these. Add 1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar and/or 1 chopped jalapeno pepper to the dough mix..
