Walnut Date Bars:

Here is a treat for kids tall and small.
What you need. What you do.
1/2 cup butter. 1/2 cup sugar. 2 eggs. 1/2 cup molasses. In a counter top mixer, cream the butter with the sugar until smooth. Add eggs one at a time and beat until smooth. Add molasses and beat until blended.
2 cups all purpose flour. 3/4 tsp. baking soda. 1 tsp. baking powder. 1/4 tsp. salt. 1/2 tsp. cinnamon. 1/2 tsp nutmeg. 1/2 tsp allspice. Sift the dry ingredients together. Add slowly to batter, mixing on slow speed until blended.
Preheat oven to 350 deg.
1 cup chopped walnut meats. 1 cup pitted chopped dates. Fold nutmeats and dates into batter.
Butter. Pour batter into a 9 X 12 buttered cake pan. Bake for about 30 min. until surface is springy.
1 & 1/2 cups powdered sugar. 2 tbsp. melted butter. 1 tbsp cognac. 1/2 tsp. lemon juice. 1 tbsp boiling water. Mix sugar, butter, cognac, and lemon juice. Add boiling water and whip until smooth. Spread frosting on date bars.
When cool, cut into 1 inch by 2 inch squares for serving.
