Back to Wesoomi's Archives The Legend of Wesoomi: Twenty Four: Crazy Wolf: August 12, 2002: The legend of Wesoomi grew quickly. The tales of his miracles were proclaimed about the land by the singers and storytellers. In time, they came to the village of the Bandar and Crazy Wolf heard them. He was sorely vexed and he began to fear Wesoomi. He spoke to Little Warrior about his concern. "It be as I thought," he said. "This Wesoomi has the powers I have feared. Soon he will have many followers. He will come to rule the Nation of People. I believe this was his design from the beginning. The Spirit Guide face he showed us was but a guise while he gained power. The time to act may have passed. I should have slain him err now. Our power will be gone. I must stop him err that comes to pass." As the Chief spoke, Little Warrior saw, in his thoughts, a chance for the undoing of Crazy Wolf. He was afflicted with an undue fear of the power of Wesoomi. It was a fear to seize upon and nurtured. I would be well for Little Warrior if he could cause Crazy Wolf to act in careless haste. "I have always spoke my heart to you Chief. Would you hear me now?" he asked. "Speak as always. I must needs trust you." "Mayhap I was in error to embrace what he said. Now I must needs believe this Wesoomi could be a threat to us. Even so, it be best to act with care. Haste could well undo us. We be not the Bandar of past times. I fear to test our strength in battle." "Who could oppose us?" sneered Crazy Wolf. "We be not the Bandar of old. That be true, but who be stronger?" "We know not of the power of Wesoomi. Mayhap he alone could move the people to oppose us with courage." "That be more reason to slay him soon, err he makes warriors of all the people. Does wit abandon your head, Little Warrior?" snorted Crazy Wolf. Little Warrior pretended discomfort. "It must needs be," he answered. "I be not the clever warrior today." "Mayhap you will be the clever warrior when we seek out Wesoomi." "As always, Chief, I be with you." "That be good. Now, I think it be past time we tested our large bellied warriors." "What be your thought, Chief?" "By the tales I must needs believe that this Wesoomi be at the village of the Husbandmen. That be the village of our very first raid. Mayhap it be time for another raid." "Would you send our warriors to raid the Husbandmen and slay Wesoomi?" "That be my thought. Little Warrior. I would slay him err he gains the power to seize my power." "Who would you have lead this raid?" asked Little Warrior cautiously. "I would lead my warriors," boasted Crazy Wolf. "I am their leader." "There be risk in that, Chief. If Wesoomi has wish to seize your power, he could find occasion to slay you." "It be a risk, but one I must take. I be chief of the Bandar." "Mayhap I should take that risk, Chief," offered Little Warrior. "Nay, Little Warrior. I be no fool. You have shared time with Wesoomi when he was Spirit Guide. I be not sure that you could slay him so easily." Little Warrior affected disappointment. "Think you that I would betray you?" he begged. "Nay, Little Warrior. I trust your loyalty. It be your will to slay this one I be not sure of." "I must needs remember you that it was I who slew my friend Swift Hare when he challenged you?" "Indeed, Little Warrior. You stood with me as always." "Then I should lead the raid on the Husbandmen and slay Wesoomi." "Nay, Little Warrior. I am chief and I shall lead." Little Warrior sighed, affecting regret. "You have spoken Chief. What would you ask of me?" "Bring your hunters and make them warriors. Lead them with me. Should you find occasion, I give you leave to slay Wesoomi." Little Warrior smiled, "I shall seek the occasion, Chief. You will see." "Then let us begin," smiled Crazy Wolf. "I will quickly train my hunters, Chief. In three days, they will be warriors." "That be good. We shall yet restore our power." When he left Crazy Wolf, Little Warrior assembled his group and took them afield. They had grown to number twenty. He told them of the planned raid on the husbandmen and its real goal. "It is the Chief's plan to slay Wesoomi," he told them. "He is sore beset by this madness. He fears Wesoomi's power most of all." "What be that to us?" questioned Hawk. "It be our fortune," replied Little Warrior. "It be the chance to undo Crazy Wolf." "How?" "We be young and strong of arm. We be swift of foot. Crazy Wolf's warriors be slow and large of belly. It be a three day journey to the Husbandmen. What think you will be the strength and will of our honored elders after that journey?" he asked with a mean grin. Hawk grinned with him. "I must needs believe they will be weary and weak of arm." "Indeed, and we will still be swift and strong." "What be your plan, Little Warrior?" "First, we must needs protect Wesoomi." "What be he to us? demanded Hawk. "What he be Hawk, is the true Spirit Guide. He be the chosen tool of the Great Spirit. This he declared to me. This I so believe. To act against him would bring the wrath of the Great Spirit upon all of the Bandar." "Mayhap, we should so tell the Chief," laughed one of the men. Little Warrior, smiled. "It be less troublesome that we help him to fail than to change his thoughts." "Indeed, it be my wish to help him fail. Now how best may we do that?" asked Hawk. "I would have a runner go to the village of the Husbandmen. There he must find Wesoomi and warn him of the plan of Crazy Wolf. He must not be there when Crazy Wolf arrives." "Would you have me do so?" asked Hawk. "Nay, Hawk. Who goes may not return to us before the raid. You must lead our own men. I must needs be with Crazy Wolf. In the last moment, If we fail, it is I who must save Wesoomi." "By slaying Crazy Wolf?" "Indeed, Mayhap I will have occasion." "Would you have us aid Crazy Wolf in the raid and slaying of the Husbandmen?" "Nay, Hawk. That be a evil thing with no gain. You must hold our men back. Mayhap you will find occasion to secretly slay some of our honored elders." Hawk grinned evilly. "I begin to see you design," he said. "When this raid be finished there will be many less of the slow and large bellied warriors to oppose us." "Aye, and Mayhap a few more of the young warriors will mark the wisdom of our cause." "We grow strong as Crazy Wolf grows weak." "Indeed, Hawk. Now let us test our skills." Little Warrior chose one of his youngest called Cat Foot to carry the warning to Wesoomi. The rest began to train themselves. While Little Warrior was in the field with his group, Crazy Wolf was making efforts to improve his warriors. It was a difficult task. He had not known the whole truth of his warriors decline. It was beyond his worst fears. In his anger, he exhorted and bullied them. Finally, when one did not respond quickly enough, Crazy Wolf slew him. After that, the rest made efforts to please him. When Little Warrior and his men returned, Crazy wolf's warriors were already tired. Still, he was not to be delayed. They prepared as best they could for a difficult task. Then the went to their lodges for the last night in their village. Come first light, Crazy Wolf called them out. They began the long journey toward the Husbandmen's village. They were old and tired, but with Little Warrior's men, they were one hundred sixty two strong. Crazy Wolf lead them out with his chin raised high. Little Warrior strode beside him. Behind, followed Hawk with his eighteen men, alert for any chance. Back to Wesoomi's Archives
