January 9, 2006:
Rachel Carson:
Remember her? She sprang unbidden into my memory while Mrs. Gaffer
was attempting to break an egg for her breakfast. "Damn
hard shells," she remarked. Damn is about the strongest
word Mrs. Gaffer ever uses, even when she is talking about me.
It seems Carson was a bit mistaken. In 1962 she wrote a book
called "Silent Spring" in which she predicted many
dire consequences of our overuse of pesticides. One of her consequences
was the death of most or all birds, hence the title, "Silent
Spring." As I recall, the theory was the bird's egg shells
would be too soft to sustain the embryos and the peepers would
die aborning. It turns out the sky did not fall after all. Oh
well, it was a best seller at the time. Maybe I'm just jealous.
Politician:
As a politician, you can pretend to be an intellect. You can
actually be an intellect. You can tell the rabble you are an
intellect whether you are or not and make them happy about it.
What you can never do is let them see that you really are an
intellect. If you do, they will vote against you. They would
rather vote for a moron than someone they really realized was
thoughtful. They have demonstrated that many times.
Marketing?
We must give the Ford marketing team credit for bullheadedness.
Whenever they create a really stupid ad they run it over and
over and over again. The latest one is a truck lifting another
truck and driving under it. Every time we turn on a TV we see
that dumb ad. Does anyone believe it?
Medicare:
I guess they are not going to change it. Congress and our inept
president should be more than aware that the drug plan is too
confusing for most people. They cannot lay this off on the alleged
senility of the seniors any longer. The kids of the seniors can't
figure it out either. It is just plain wrong. It is worse than
the income tax form 1040 which, by itself, is a paper nightmare.
This drug plan is a federally created fiasco. It is stupid and
wrong and they will not fix it. They do not care, so long as
they can reward their contributors with a piece of the pie. That
is all they want. That is all they ever wanted. It's not about
seniors after all, it's about payoffs. Mrs. Gaffer says, "When
the government is involved, everything we do is more expensive
and it always gets screwed up."
Trans Fat:
It's the latest health-nut media BS phrase. The media loves crap
like this. It gives them more smoke to cover that fact that they
only have 15 minutes of news and 2 hours in which to deliver
it. What does it mean? Does anyone know? I'm 75 years old. Up
until last week I had never heard of trans fat. Now that I know,
I'll probably die of an overdose of trans fat tomorrow. Bizarre!
Abramoff:
Jack is spilling the beans. Millions on bribes and graft have
gone down and it seems he will be naming names just to save his
own pitiful posterior. A lot of Washington bigshots will be running
scared. Delay is looking guilty already. I love it. I hope they
all go down. These scumbags are confirming everything I thought
abut them. Some of them are giving back the bribes as though
that should make a difference. If you robbed a gas station and
gave the money back when you were caught, would they let you
go? You would get no mercy and these scum should get no mercy.
Down and dirty baby, down and dirty. Make my day. Hee, hee, hee!
Abramoff is the same guy who conned the Michigan Chippawas
out of a few million. He was supposed to bribe some lawmakers
to do something or other for them. Instead, he just took the
money and did nothing. Then these noble savages had the gall
to complain to congress about it. I don't remember the exact
phrase, but there must be something about the pot and the kettle
in this.
Twelve Coal Miners Are Dead:
This is a tragedy that need not have happened. It happened in
Sago West Virginia in a mine run by International Coal Group
Inc and West Virginia Mining. The CEO of that outfit is the soon
to be notorious Ben Hatfield. This mine had 208 federal safety
violations and 144 violations from the state of West Virginia,
all in 2005. Why are they still operating? The behavior of the
mine operators and the governments involved is unconscionable.
What they did is tantamount to negligent homicide.
Credit Cards:
It seems a lot of people are stretched thin. They have maxed
out their cards and are just skimping by with minimum payments.
Now the government has mandated that the minimum payment will
be about doubled. Oh, oh! Is this why they changed the bankruptcy
rules?
Saginaw, Michigan:
It's a mid sized town with a population of around 100,000. In
the first three days of 2006 they had 8 shootings. The cops are
trying to investigate, but the citizens are not cooperating.
They say they won't snitch. If I was a cop in that situation,
I would tell the witness, "Okay kiddo, but when your brother
or sister gets shot, don't call me. I won't come. You don't care.
I don't care."
These bozos claim the won't talk because they fear retaliation.
I think it was Sir Winston Churchill who said, "An appeaser
is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."
If those people are willing to let a small pack of punk thug
savages control their entire city through fear, they might as
well be dead. Even if I didn't talk to the cops, I would at least
try to kill a few of those thugs before they got me. Where is
Bronson when we need him?
Robertson Again:
His latest gaffe was to claim that Sharon's stroke was God's
punishment. I'm not sure what he was allegedly punished for.
Perhaps being a Jew is enough. Poor Robertson. This fool is so
serious and he takes himself so seriously. He does not realize,
does not even have a clue, that all he is doing is providing
comic relief for the rest of us.
The USPS:
They are going to raise the postage rate again. It will go up
two cents. That does not sound like much and it would not be
much if they were competent and actually delivered the mail.
A spokeswoman said it's a good deal. She said, for 39 cents you
can get something delivered to the bottom of the Grand Canyon
or the highest mountain in America. That is simply not true.
The fact is, they do not deliver the mail. I cannot even get
it delivered to my home. They have flat out refused to deliver
my mail. I have to have a postoffice box and go over there to
get my mail. That's a 6.5 mile round trip. Even then, my mail
often disappears and someone else's mail gets put in my box.
I suppose that happens to my mail too. It gets put in someone
else's box and they just trash it. I don't do that. I take the
miss-delivered mail back to the desk. Sometimes they say thank
you. Usually the don't. Mostly, they don't care.
Another Puzzle:
Who is Margaret Mead? Did she invent honey wine? What else did
she do?
