August 21, 2006:

The Krim:
In Flint a race they call the Krim comes off every year. People come from all over the world to run the Krim. Every year, it is someone from Kenya who wins the race, but that does not matter. The Kenyans get the prize and the honor and everyone is fine with that. For the others, the race is about being there, finishing, and enjoying the experience. That is how it should be.

Local News:
Channel 12 ABC. We watch it because it is local and occasionally tells us something useful about the local situation. The thing that would be humorous, were it not so tragic, is the weatherman is the most literate person on that show.

About making mistakes:
You do what you can to repair the damage, you learn what you can from the experience, then you go on. You cannot suspend your entire life because you made one mistake. The only people who don't make mistakes are those who don't do anything useful. Participating requires risk taking. Risk taking sometimes results in mistakes. Sometimes people even get hurt.

New Jersey:
For some reason a bunch of properties were removed from a list of contaminated sites and one of them became a daycare center. Now some kids have very high levels of mercury poisoning and some are actually sick. Me thinks some heads ought to roll for this. Let us wait and see. Maybe it will be hushed up.

Where are the Cell Phones:
According to the local news, some people from Texas were arrested after they bought 600 or 1000 cell phones. We get conflicting counts from our local news people. The phones had been tampered with. We don't know why, but some are guessing it was to make bombs. In Ohio another person or persons bought 600 cell phones so they tell us. One person was arrested, but he did not have the phones. Where are they? No one knows. The detainee says he sold them to someone in Dearborn, Michigan? Who? This is really weird. We don't know whether to believe the news people or not. Maybe someone in Dearborn is planning to celebrate Dearborn homecoming by blowing up a parade float, or maybe a root beer float. Who knows? Will the real terrorist please stand up!

Homeland Defense:
The boss of Homeland Defense was interviewed by Stephanopolous. He supported the Patriot Act, the government's programs of message monitoring, and money transfer monitoring. I have always ben opposed to the Patriot act as excessive intrusion by the government. As far as my messages are concerned, I don't really care. Telephone and email communication are not secure and never will be. Anyone, including an inept government can monitor our messages and we have not way to detect them, let alone stop them. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fool.

The personal solution is simple. I never say anything on my telephone or in my email that I really want to keep private. That's just common sense. As to my money transfers, what money? I have a checking account and I sometimes write checks. I don't care who knows that. If you have even a clue about how banks work, you would know money transfers have never been and cannot be secure. Anyone with rudimentary computer skills can find out about your assets.

Jill Carroll:
She is back in the news again. She was babbling the first time I saw her and she is still babbling and using all of the hand motions I usually associate with an airhead. I still think she is an airhead and I think the Christian Science Monitor (CSM) editors were remiss in allowing her to act as a freelance reporter on their behalf. She should never have been in Iraq. She is absolutely too naive. No matter. They are going to fill a lot of column inches with her story. I guess that's where it's at. Selling newspapers is the name of the game. Seems to me I remember a time when the CSM was a respected newspaper.

Western Goulash:
Love, sex, and marriage. We Westerners, especially when we are young, tend to treat those three words as synonyms. They are not. There are three quite different concepts involved, but we mix them together like Goulash and serve them all up on the same plate, take it or leave it! Look at the words for goodness sake. Love is an emotion, a feeling. Sex, the way it's used here, is an activity, a behavior. Marriage is a special kind of relationship.

There is a serious problem in all of this. If you feel an emotion for another person that you identify as love, you cannot express it. There is nothing active or physical implied in the word love. Just the same, the word is very likely to cause strange behavior in people. I have said it to some women and saw terror in their eyes. In Another case, I said it to a woman and she started taking off her clothes. I once said it to a male friend and he never spoke to me again. Now, I ask you, are any of those behaviors rational? Oh well, sigh!

Check out William's Corner:
I am declaring for Governor of Michigan. I will be presenting a series of essays of why we need an alternative to the current two candidates. Please read the essays. Whether you vote for me or not these issues are important. You should be thinking about them if you live in Michigan. They are probably important issues for most other states as well.

Klan:
We had our reunion Saturday last. About 40 of them came. They ate almost everything in my larder. They used up all of my toilet paper and they overflowed my septic tank. Oh well. I love them every one. I still have some dried beans and my garden. My old three holer outhouse is still there with an old Sears catalog. That's about all Sears is good for since they sold out to Kmart. Anyhow, I'll get by for another year until they descend on me again.
