The Weekly Notes:

October 9, 2006:

Evangelists:

I accidentally discovered a very easy way to deal with them. A couple of those Watchtower blowhards came by last week and interrupted my beer and cigar break. When I saw the bible and the pamphlets, the following brief exchange occurred.

Me: Oh, you’re pushing religion.

He: We are not pushing religion, but we have the information if you are interested.

Me: Well, I’m not interested. I am a heathen, but thanks for coming by.

He: Okay, thank you.

Then they turned and walked back to their car.

The big thing is, I did not waste any time and I did not confront them. I simply stated a pure fact with a friendly smile. It was interesting to me that the young woman who was with the stiff old pusher broke into a delightful smile when I told them I was a heathen. It occurs to me that there is hope for the offspring’s of these offensive boors. These kids have to go to school and they get exposed to the broader culture there. Some of them must start to think about the bull that’s been laid on them. It can’t hurt.

From Microsoft’s Bookshelf:

heathen (hê´then) noun

plural heathens or  heathen

1.       a. One who adheres to the religion of a people or nation that does not acknowledge the God of Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. b. Such persons considered as a group; the unconverted.

2.       a. One who is regarded as irreligious, uncivilized, or unenlightened. b. Such persons considered as a group.

Foley’s Folly:

This guy is a real piece of work. First, he works hard to pass a bill to control pedophiles while pretending to be pure and noble. Next thing we know he has violated the very law he passed. If it was not for ABC news, he might have gotten away with it. He has been preying on the kids who came to serve in congress as pages, while his associates were covering for him.

The Speaker of the House, Hastert, is an accessory after the fact. He has been covering for Foley. That is equivalent to what the Bishops of the Catholic Church did about pedophile priests. In both cases, they were covering for the most despicable of humans, people who prey on children. Now we find that Foley wants us to feel sorry for him because he was molested when he was a little kid. Give me a break! I know a few other people who were molested too. So what? Pedophile is a lifestyle choice. There is no excuse.

White House:

A bunch of do-gooder fools are trying to get some White House fools for taking gifts from Abramoff. It’s a pretty thin beef. He is alleged to have spread about 25 grand over 187 contacts. Do the math. 25,000 divided by 187. That’s about 130 bucks each. Don’t hardly seem worth the effort when we consider what is being wasted in Iraq. I think it’s a red Herring.

Poet Laureate:

On the evening news we were told that Donald Hall had become poet laureate. We were not told how that happened and I am wondering about it. Is there a tribunal somewhere that is empowered to anoint people in the arts? Is it a secret function of Congress? How does a person get anointed? This guy read his first poem as poet laureate on the evening news. I was not impressed. He sounded like a guy trying to sound like Robert Frost.

Ode to Haul:

O Donald Hall,

How did you get,

To be the poet,

Laureate?

The Loons Nest:

Loon is the name of a bird that is native to Michigan. It is also the name of a Midland, MI minor league baseball team. They are to be part of the Dodgers farm system. Yesterday, their stadium was named the “Dow Diamond” by Dow of Midland. How shabby! They paid some pitiful sum of money for that privilege. I personally think the stadium should have been called the Loon’s Nest. Who knows? Maybe they are saving that name for the Dow executive suite or even for the White House. I guess I’m just a sore head. I thought the Tiger’s stadium should have been called the Tiger’s Den. Instead, they named it Comerica Park. When he did that, I swore I would never set foot in Comerica Park.

I Tried:

I deliberately did not watch the Michigan governor’s debate between Granholm and DeVos, but it did not help. The media shoved it in my face the next day. What a treat, to see two so-called adults trying to out shout each other. If kids behaved that way we would send them to their rooms. Boorish! Absolutely boorish!

Protectorates:

Call me a fascist or colonialist! I have concluded that the United States is going to stay in Iraq a bit longer, perhaps forever. I believe our foreign policy worked much better when we just invaded a country and set up a protectorate with a military governor. Most of those places ended up with a viable democracy, like Japan. We instituted a rule of law. We enforced the peace while the local economy rebuilt. We created a short tradition of stability. We did this through active political control, not though the mamby pamby, bring the local government up to speed nonsense. We were the government for as long as it took because the local government was corrupt.

In addition, it required fewer troops and fewer deaths in the long run. Just the American presence with strict rule of law and well trained troops was enough. We cannot create a democracy in a few months where no history of law or stability exists. It’s a gross waste of American Soldiers and resources. Too many lives get lost for nothing. If we are going to get involved, let=s do in a way that will work instead of pussy footing around for fear of being called colonialists by a pack of raggedy butchers. If we can’t do that, let=s stop putting American Soldiers on the line.

The United Nations concept just bogs us down with it=s bureaucratic bologna. The United Nations is inept and always will be. America should not be a military and financial extension of that blundering bureaucracy. If we act at all, we should act unilaterally. Iraq should have an American military governor now. Sad Mad Hussein should be in prison. If that’s fascism, call me a fascist but it would save a lot of lives and resources.
