Weekly Notes:

October 23, 2006:

No Riot!

On Saturday, November 14, the Detroit Tigers won the American League championship. It was a decisive victory ending appropriately with one swing of a powerful bat. The most impressive thing about this whole thing is there were no rioting and looting in Detroit. The thugs who have ruled and terrified that city for so long did not show up. Perhaps Detroit is beginning to grow up. We could hope for that.

Ford Motor Company:

The management at Ford has done a good thing for their retirees. They will be continuing our drug coverage insurance. They sent all of us a letter explaining that the coverage we now have is better than any Medicare plan available. With so many companies betraying their retired employees this is indeed good news for retired Ford workers. It’s not like Ford is prospering at this time. They are not, but I hope they will recover soon. I would love to see them get some creative engineers and scientists on their payroll. They desperately need people who can think outside the engineer’s normal mindset and come up with something new.

While we are here with Ford, I think Ford could do Detroit a favor too. Wouldn’t it be nice if Ford would sell the Detroit Lions to Ilitch? It would be a win, win situation. Ford could put the money into real research and try to get a unique product. Ilitch could give Detroit another winning team. What more could we ask?

Even China Went Along:

North Korea popped a firecracker sized nuke and the whole world went ballistic. The security council voted unanimous to censure the pompous midget. It makes sense for China to be concerned. Sure, China has been supplying the midget and keeping him afloat. So what? That little fart just might be nutty enough to try to nuke China. It wouldn’t be the first time a pet bit his master. The fact is Ping Ding Bang, or whatever his name is, has embarrassed his master. That’s not smart.

The G. W. Library:

They tell us three universities in Texas are battling it out to host the proposed Bush the Younger library. The contenders are Baylor, Southern Methodists, and University of Dallas. What they all have in common is they are fundamentalist religious schools. That’s okay with me. I don’t care where they put it so long as it is not in my back yard!

Insanity:

There was a small blurb about modern commuting on the local TV news. They say it’s taking much more time that it used to. Getting to work has become a chore in itself. Some people are using the commuting time to double task, so they say. Then they showed us one woman who was using a cell phone and a handheld computer at the same time while steering a vehicle with her elbows whenever she happened to look at the road. I would not call that double tasking. I would call it insanity and when she kills someone with her auto, I would charge her with murder One. That’s premeditated stupidity!

Another Airline, Another Judge:

Again, a judge has colluded with big business to allow another airline to throw out its contract with the unions. Bad management produces lost revenue, but the managers are never punished. Whether it’s Kmart, Northwest, or some other outfit, it’s the workers and-or the stockholders who take the hit. The judges collude with the managers and they all walk away laughing at the damn-fool workers and stockholders.

NAFTA:

Some of our political hacks, like DeVos of Michigan, are supporting NAFTA. Usually these are businessmen or toadies thereof who do it out of greed. I support NAFTA too, because America is being overtaken by Europe and Asia. I want the dollar to be as strong as or stronger than the EURO. One way to do that is to make a North American trading block that is more powerful than Europe. There will be some dislocations for sure.  Could it be worse than what is happening now where America cannot compete anywhere in the world?

All we need to do is bring Mexico up to speed, stop the Canadians from being snotty, and stop American businessmen from being stupidly greedy. I don’t see any problem with helping Mexico to bootstrap themselves. I don’t see any problem with reasoning with the Canadians. I think the biggest obstacle will be to stop American businessmen from being stupidly greedy.

He Got His Way:

King George signed into law a provision to allow American interrogators to torture detainees. It also suspends Habeas Corpus and allows hearsay evidence. Nice going George! I hope none of our kids get captured now. Of course, they will. Where will our high ground be when the Muslims reciprocate?
