Weekly Notes:

January 22, 2007:

Justice:

I think it’s time we had a uniform code of justice for the entire country. It should be written by legal experts. It should define standard punishments for crimes everywhere. Every state in the union could adopt the code. Judges would no longer be able to be lenient or harsh based on their own prejudices. Also parole boards would not be able to let murders walk. It should prescribe life in prison without parole for murderers, pedophiles, identity thieves, use of a gun in any crime, rape, and betrayal of trust. We are much too easy on criminals, which is one reason we have so many.

When I watch the news each evening, most of what I see is crime, crime, and more crime. I don’t believe this is unique to Flint, Michigan. I think it is countrywide. What is most bizarre is the confusion of values resulting in ridiculous charges and sentences. Look at some of the charges we hand out now. A person who was running a drug house was charged with a misdemeanor. That’s crazy. If running a drug house is not a felony, what is? On the other hand, a man who was caught having sex with another man was charged with a felony. How is having consensual sex a felony and selling crack just a misdemeanor? We got very lost somewhere along the way.

A Change of Pace:

If you want a change of pace try this. Put ¼ tsp. of ground ginger and ¼ tsp of sugar in a 10-ounce cup. Fill with boiling water and stir. Try it as a morning wake-me-up or an afternoon warm-me-up. You will either hate it of like it. I tried it after Mrs. Gaffer found a blurb in an ARRP publication claiming that ginger is useful in reducing arthritic pain. I have not noticed any effect like that, but I do find it a pleasant change of pace from coffee.

Bay City, MI:

Those rabble buffoons voted to shut down most of their libraries. They refused to renew most of the operating millage. Of course, who needs libraries when you have so many bars and beaneries? Duh!

A Serious Problem:

I don’t care a great deal about football, basketball, or any other spectator sport, but I do see a serious problem. Year after year, the star athletes of many universities leave to go pro before they have finished their education. It is not just the kid who looses. The coach and team that invested their time in the kid are also cheated when he leaves early. I personally think it is unconscionable of the pro leagues to allow this to continue. It is unethical in the extreme. They ought to have an age rule that makes it impossible for a kid to go pro before he could have graduated from college. They need not tell a kid he must go to school, but they should not bribe him away from the opportunity.

Iraq:

To be honest, America is in Iraq illegally. There is no justification for us to have invaded that place in the first place. However, the biggest force for evil in Iraq is Al Sadr. It is clear that Maliki is his puppet. He will not deal with it. So as long as we are in that place illegally anyway, we ought to take him out.

George Bush is Evil:

He is probably not evil on purpose, but by stupidity. In addition, he is using our troops to get his way politically. If the Dumbocrats try to stop him, he will claim they are against the troops. Most people in America understand that we cannot win in Iraq and this troop surge will just put more of our kids in harms way. The Mad King’s response is, don’t bother me with the facts, my mind is made up. Murtha is not so reticent about the fiasco. He is dead set against the Mad King’s plan. Of course, he cannot stop it, but he vowed to try.

Steven Hadley:

He is the man behind the Bush plan for a troop surge. He is the national security advisor for George. When Stephanopoulos tried to pin him down on Iran and Syria, he mush mouthed around their acts of war against Iraq. Of course, it makes sense since America committed an even more notorious act of war against Iraq.

How Did it Happen:

The state’s attorney general has taken over the Duke lacrosse case for Nifong. Now we will see how honest that guy is. I don’t hold out much hope. He let this fiasco go on too long and he only stepped in because the DA recused himself. If anyone goes to prison, it should be the DA. He has committed the most serious of all possible crimes. He is guilty of betrayal of trust. I have three questions. Why is this fiasco continuing when there is no evidence against the defendants? How did a slime ball like Nifong come to power in North Carolina? Are the rabble voters that stupid? Sick, very sick!

Big Tobacco:

They are about as two faced as it is possible to be. Out of their right mouth, they do a phony campaign to steer kids away from tobacco products. Meanwhile, their left hand is slipping extra nicotine into their products to hook the kids on smoking. Who is kidding who here? These bums have not changed. Any way you slice it, they are dishonest and shabby.

Consumer Report:

They got challenges by the government on some baby car seats and they had to backpedal very fast. This is one of those times when being a feeble old man can be revealing. When I was younger and, can you believe it, dumber, I used to believe these Consumer Reports. That was before we bought our first refrigerator based on their reports. I forget the brand. I only know it was a lemon from the get-go. That was the last time I relied on their alleged reports.

For those who do not know, they do not test many of the products themselves. They farm the work out to subcontractors and often to amateurs. Then they publish the reports with no first hand knowledge of the products that were tested. They say they cannot reveal who did the actual test on the car seats. Perhaps they don’t even know. My advice is simple. On major purchase, it is imperative to do your own research if you don’t want to get burned.
