Weekly Notes:

April 16, 2007:

Dimensions:

We know what a three dimensional object, such as a cube, is like. We know that a cube has a volume equal to the length of one side cubed (S3). What would a five dimensional object look like? Would its volume be equal to S5? How many dimensions would an object need to contain the entire universe? Never mind answering these questions. Just think about them.

Pets:

The pet food industry is claiming that pets are just property and they are only liable for the purchase price of the animal if they kill it through negligence. It does not wash. If pets were just property, people would not have pets because caring for them is a big pain in the butt. These bums have built a multibillion-dollar industry based on the premise that pets are not property to their owners. Their behavior and their advertising both give the lie to their claim. Pets are family and the pet food makers have profited from that fact.

Rant and Rave:

I am getting tired of ranting and raving about the ethanol fraud being perpetrated by our government and the farm lobby. Still, I must point out this fraud again and again. It is becoming a very expensive con. Farmers everywhere are diverting cropland to corn production for manufacturing grossly inefficient fuel. Without government subsidies, ethanol is not at all competitive. This ethanol fraud is being strongly promoted and supported by that woman in Lansing.

According to news reports, this is creating artificial shortages in our food supply. It is no longer limited to the tortilla shortage in Mexico. This insanity is even causing shortages of feed grains for meat and milk. Also affected are bean and produce crops. Prices are going up across the board on farm products. We end up paying for this madness in two ways. Our governments are using our tax monies to subsidize the ethanol production. Then we end up also paying more for food.

Word Confusion:

I just read the introduction to a book I recently bought about American history. I will not name or critique the book because I have not read it yet. However, I was put off a bit by this introduction, which was just the author’s rationale for writing it. I think he was confused about the meanings of some words he used. He equated criticism with cynicism. I don’t think that is correct. Then he went on to equate cynicism with hopelessness. Wrong again! Let’s look it up in Microsoft’s Bookshelf.

Criticize means to find fault with or to judge the merits and faults.

In my mind, this is what all good citizens should do. It is how we get better.

Cynicism is more negative. A cynic is someone who believes the worst of everyone.

This kind of thinking and behavior is self-defeating. Good citizens are not cynics, but they are critics.

Hopelessness means having no hope. It is a condition of apathy.

This is not a condition that causes criticism. If there is no hope, we do not criticize, we give up and do nothing. I was like that for a while, but it is a difficult emotion to sustain. It eats at your soul until you must do something, even if it can’t possibly work.

Consultants:

A local nutcase shot three fellow employees after he had been fired from his job. He fled up Intestate 75 and led police on a 120 MPH chase. They did catch him. It turns out one of his victims died and two were wounded. After that, channel 12 local news did a classic. They had these bonehead consultants on their show talking about precautions firms could take to prevent this kind of thing. Say what?

They should have an evacuation plan and they should have safe-rooms.  I guess they did not notice that this guy came in shooting. He did not warn them, he just did it. Tell me what good an evacuation plan or a safe room would be when there is not time to evacuate and no time to hide. It should be clear, even to consultants that we cannot protect ourselves against random violence. We cannot even protect the president for Gord’s sake. I think I missed my calling. I should have been a consultant. I could recommend that everyone in the workplace should wear a flak jacket. Duh!

Stem Cells:

I get that some stem cell therapy actually worked for diabetes in children. Every kid who got this treatment improved. It’s too soon to exult yet, but this sounds exciting and wonderful.

 Longer Tours:

Our military guys are having their tours extended again. They get to stay as targets in the Iraq shooting gallery. George’s toady Gates says this is a difficult but necessary step. Is it really? These people can get maimed and killed over there. I could understand that if they were defending America. Is it really necessary for them to get maimed and killed defending the cheap two bit ego of a politician?

The news people tell us the National Guard is having trouble getting new recruits. Gee, I wonder why! Could it be because these people have been lied to again and again about their time of service?

Lipitor:

Thie first artificial heart was designed by Dr. Robert Jarvik and implanted in Barney Clark. I guess Jarvik shot his wad on that one. He is now a prominent huckster for Lipitor. What a come down for a scientist. It’s a tragedy.

Nifong:

If anyone but a prosecutor had done to those three kids at Duke what he did, he would be charged with a crime. He has severely damaged three young men and their families forever. What he did was a gross betrayal of trust. Nifong is a criminal, but because he is a DA he is apparently protected. That is patent crap. The worst that can happen to him is he will be disbarred. We do not even know for sure if that will happen. He should be in prison like any other criminal. No one should be above the law. When I become God Emperor, no one will be, including me.
