Weekly Notes:

April 30, 2007:

Bureaucrats:

The University of Michigan, Flint is building a new student residence hall. They say it will cost 28 million. Experience tells me that will end up being a gross underestimate, but let’s assume they are right this time. The hall will house 300 kids. Do the math. That’s $93,333.33 per kid. Buildings built in the last 50years usually last 20 years or less. Assuming they have zero maintenance, that comes out to $4,666.67 per kid per year. Hummmm.

The real Problem:

As usual after the tragic events at Virginia Tech., the professional handwringers are worrying the wrong problem. They keep babbling about how you deal with crazy people. If we do this we’ll be damned, if we do the other we’ll be damned, etcetera. These people never do notice the obvious. They are trying to deal with a symptom rather than the cause. Politicians do that all the time. There is no solution to a symptom. The real question is, how do we keep from creating crazy people? The answer to that question is in my essay, “Child Sociopaths” in “Willie Gaffer’s Archives.” I’m not going to rewrite it here. Just read the essay if you wish.

More on Cops:

Perhaps I should say moron cops. Two poorly trained Flint, Michigan cops shot a  woman. She had a knife with a 3 inch blade in her hand and she was drunk. These brave law officers did not try to take her knife away. They just whipped out their guns and shot her to death. They shot her five times. I guess that showed her! She probably won’t pull a knife on a cop again, or get drunk again, or hug her kids again, or…

Isn’t it time for Michigan to have a real four-year police academy where they could teach cops that deadly force should not be the first choice?

Another Dumb One:

Some kids in Flint drove away with their aunt’s car. The driver was 12 years old. The other kid was younger. Fortunately they were stopped before a disaster occurred. Now the idiot media is wondering if the kids should be punished. As is normal, everyone missed the point. The person who should be in prison is the idiot aunt who left the kids in the car with the keys in the ignition while she went shopping. Duh!

Ambien:

It’s a sleeping pill. Now the FDA has approved a generic version of the pill. You still need a prescription to get it, but it will be cheaper. I would respectfully suggest that a person who takes these pills does not need pills. He probably needs emotional therapy. We have a pill for everything except common sense.

The Big Kid:

Toyota is now the big kid on the block. It was inevitable. Wagoner with his posturing, bluster, and business as usual planning ensured it. The Japanese have been better at making appliances for a long time. They have better quality control. What they don’t have is innovation, but, of course, neither does GM or Ford. It’s bee a long time since either of those companies had decent leadership, or any real car people.

Speaking of Leaders:

An old leader, Lee Iacocca, wrote a book. Are you surprised? The title is “Where Have All the Leaders Gone?” The Detroit Free Press had some excerpts, which I read. It seems Lee is saying the same things I have been saying for about a decade. The difference is, he has a reputation and people will read what he says. You will probably read it. You will be titillated and you will say, “Right on” or “He sure tells it the way it is.” Then you will put the book down and forget it.

What you will not do is get off your butt and do anything different. You will not think about it.  Knee jerk Republicrumbs will still be knee jerk Republicrumbs and Knee jerk Dumbocrats will still be knee jerk Dumbocrats, and fools like Bush and Pelosi will still be in charge. Months ago, when the Dumbocrats came to power I told you nothing would change. Nothing can change so long as you rabble think in terms of them or us.

Speaking of Rabble:

Several communities in this area are going to close their libraries. The rabble consistently refuses to renew the taxes that have been in place for decades. Ignorant people ensuring that the next generation will also be ignorant. Heck, who needs libraries when we have Blackberries and I-pods? Who cares about reading and literacy? The rabble never changes. To paraphrase a biblical phrase, the rabble you will always have with you.

I Wouldn’t Pay a Nickel:

Now we find that people have paid ten thousand to 28 thousand bucks to have dinner with Nancy Pelosi. It’s not the dinner but access they want. Access is still for sale. This is exactly the kind of crap that Pelosi vowed would change. I guess it has changed. The cost of access has gone up from what the Republicrumbs charged a couple of years ago. Pelosi and the other newly elected are just like all the rest. Pure evil!

Tillman:

The scandal will not go away. The cover up did not cover. The president says he was not aware of the Tillman cover-up. I was not aware that he was aware of anything. It’s hard to see things when you have your head in a place where the sun don’t shine. As to the scandal, the army should have told the truth from the git-go. It is a tragic truth about war that people are sometimes killed by friendly fire. Considering the situations that occur, it is inevitable. The stupidity was in the militaries attempt to whitewash Tillman’s death.

Half Staff:

There is some kind of Brouhaha about the flag being lowered to half-staff for the kids at Virginia Tech. Some people claim the flags should also be lowered for the kids being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. I respectfully ask, what’s to keep you from honoring those troops. If you check, you will find there is no law regarding this issue. There are only guidelines. It’s really up to you. My flag has been at half-staff since shortly after we went into Iraq. It will remain so until we get out of that mess in Iraq.

Violence:

We still have parents groups trying to get the government to be responsible for their kids. They want them to make laws about violence on TV. Hey, you lazy bums, that TV has a switch to turn it off. It’s not a baby sitter, it’s an appliance. It is not the government’s fault that you don’t have the courage to stand up to your kid. Quit being a coward.

It’s Coming Home:

The Saudi Royal Family is getting its comeuppance. Their financing of terrorism did not make them immune. They became a target. They just uncovered a huge plot to do enormous damage to Arabia. They found weapons and explosives enough to put them out of business. I wonder how many plots they did not uncover and when the next one will come down.
