Weekly Notes:

May21, 2007:

William J. Bennett:

This guy wrote a history book called “America — The Last Best Hope.” As I read through the book I am beginning to wonder about this historian. I find it difficult to believe he could write an account of the Mexican American War without ever mentioning Santa Anna, but he did. Other accounts I have read name Antonio López de Santa Anna as the supreme commander of Mexican forces. In fact, he took the rap for the defeat of Mexico, which was inflicted by the American forces. In that war, America gained, not only Texas, but pretty much all of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. For sure, Santa Anna lost his job after that humiliation. He died, as he was born, powerless.

Jerry Falwell:

His Lord has called him home. If you cannot find something good to say about the deceased, say nothing.

Reading First:

It’s another government boondoggle. It has cost us 5 billion bucks over 5 years and the evidence shows the program is not effective. It seems a great deal of the money went to political payoffs. So, what else is new?

The Pika:

From Microsoft’s Bookshelf we find this. Any of several small, tailless, furry mammals of the genus Ochotona of the mountains of North America and Eurasia, resembling guinea pigs but belonging to the order of lagomorphs that includes the hares and rabbits. Also called coney1, rock rabbit.

Whatever they are, they are dying off. It seems that global warming is driving them higher and higher in the mountains where they live. With their furry coats, they cannot stand warm weather. Hence, when thy reach the top of whatever mountain they lived on, and the warming catches up with them, they die. Actually, I care squat about little rodents that are called rabbits, but I do care about my grandchildren. It seems I am one of the few who do. So I have work to do. We need solutions to these problems. I will think it through, but I may have to stop writing and become a full time researcher.

A Page:

There are a lot of liars and various kinds of criminals in Washington who ought to take a page from the book of Henry Clay. He once said, “I had rather be right than be president.” Oh, for the good old days, when at least a few politicians were honest.

Oh, Oh!

If it is true, the news I get is not good. I noticed a TV report that said the Ford family is selling off some of its Ford Stock. I only heard it once in passing. If the Fords are bailing out it does not speak well for the rest of us. It could be the beginning of the end.

Chrysler is also headed for doom. An investment group has bought the company. Daimler took a big loss on the sale after their heavy-handed managers turned it into a white elephant. If the new investors follow the normal pattern for outfits like this, the outcome is foreordained. First, they will do short term crippling surgeries to suck out their investment along with the lifeblood of the company. They will make Chrysler look profitable, short term. Then they will sell the carcass for whatever they can get. If they can’t sell it, no problem, they will liquidate it and sell the pieces.

Meanwhile, that woman in Lansing and certain other fools are trying to get the feds to pass laws. They hope the laws will make America’s big three automakers viable. No new laws will make their incompetence go away. Only the automakers can do that. The managers would have to hire thoughtful car people to manage the companies. Then they would have to fire themselves. That would get rid of the incompetence, which is concentrated at the top.

Driving Poor:

The minimum wage is $6.95 per hour. Gas is $3.50 per gallon. Oh well, George, let them eat cake. On the bright side, the oil companies are making record profits. George’s fat wallowing cronies, who never lifted a finger in honest labor in their lives, are getting fatter by the minute. Ain’t that swell?

Path to Citizenship:

Some of the lawmakers wanted to resolve the illegal immigrant problem by providing a path to citizenship. It would not be an easy path, nor should it be. It matters not. Their compromise bill will not pass. The frothing extremists of both sides are blocking it. The solution is too reasonable for these irrational madmen legislators. Pelosi will do her best to kill it. I still believe the only long-term workable solution is to give Mexico a path to statehood. For sure, Texas would oppose that. That would make Texas a humiliating third in area. I doubt if Alaska would care.

Make it Fun:

A local school has figure out how to get kids to exercise. They turned gym class exercise into a game and a competition. They made it fun for the kids. Why did it take so long for these fools to figure out the obvious? You will not be able to stop kids from doing things they enjoy, be it exercise or learning. Even after they proved it, there is only one local school doing it. Duh!

Credit Cards:

Now the credit card companies have a new scam. If we pay them an upfront fee, they will promise to not give other people credit cards in our names. I swear, that’s what the news report said. How many politicians would they have to pay off to get away with a scam like that? Thanks for protecting us, you bungholes in Washington.

Cheap Alternative?

The price of food in America is up about 4 percent over last year. I told you this would happen. Don’t blame the farmers. Blame that woman in Lansing and many more just like her. Almost all food is derived from corn in one way or another. Milk, meat, Twinkies, and even Krispy Cream donuts use corn products somewhere in the chain. So does ethanol and therein is the problem. Food is being diverted through subsidies into the production of this grossly inefficient fuel. I told you months ago, you would end up paying for it. Eventually, you will also pay for it in an increased tax burden to support the subsidies. When there are millions of children starving, diverting food into fuel, even if it were economically viable, is beyond evil. But hey, it makes that woman in Lansing look good. Let us prey!
