June 16, 2003:
Friend of the Court, Ho, Ho:
Flint update from Weekly Notes May 26, 2003. The people who were
waiting for their child support checks a couple of weeks ago
are still waiting. They are still advised to be patient. It is
not clear what this state takeover of the Friend of the Court
is supposed to achieve. It cannot be to save money, because Flint
has had to hire extra people to handle the irate phone calls.
I think it's a bureaucratic power grab. Nothing more!
Weapons of Mass Destruction:
Now it turns out there was an intelligence report way back in
2002 indicating that there was no evidence of these weapons in
Iraq. It seems the administration covered that one up. Well,
let's be fair. Maybe they just lost it by accident. What do you
think? Hans Blix is very polite about it. He is saying what everyone
else is saying, but he did not use the word lie to describe what
they did. Congress, on the other hand, is getting ready to investigate
the whole thing. Sure they will, behind closed doors. It is,
after all, a republican Congress.
Celebrities:
Isn't it interesting that most celebrities end up being hucksters?
They build up a good name then trash it for Madison Avenue money
that they don't need. Isn't it a shame?
A Different Drum Beat:
Sixty Minutes on June 8, 2003. This show seems to be reenforcing
what I have long feared. Bush a solidly religious fundamentalist
himself, with the support of the American religious extreme right,
may be allying himself with Ariel Sharon in a holy war. It is
to be Jews and Christians against Muslims. In this scenario the
so called peace initiative is just a ploy. it's a red herring
to misdirect attention.
The thoughtful people among us must doubt that Bush would
involve himself in something so clearly wrong. We can hope it
is just bologna, but the spokeswoman for these Christian extremist
believes it to be the true situation. She was ecstatic on this
show. Apparently, so is Falwell, their best known and most blatant
spokesman. These people terrify me. You only need to look into
the eyes of some of them to realize they are mad. Their expressions
when they talk about it is the same we would expect to see in
a person having an erotic experience. They really get off on
it.
These people bring to mind the medieval murders riding out
of Rome under the flag of the church on their crusades. I think
we need to understand that, to a religious fundamentalist, murder
is not evil. It is a duty much like a sacrament. It is not just
the Muslim extremists who think this way. If you did not see
it, please buy the tape of the show and watch it. Perhaps you
will be as frightened as I am. If this plays out and Bush really
is involved we can expect an invasion of Iran or Syria in the
near future. I dearly hope it is all wishful thinking by these
psychotic people.
Follow Up:
June 10, 2003: George's Roadmap to Peace is in the toilet already.
It seems the Jews attack the Gaza Strip with no provocation at
all. The rational, there was a terrorist leader in the area.
There really was and he was wounded. So what? They also killed
and wounded dozens of bystanders. They even shot up ambulances.
George was very firm. He said right out, You shouldn't ought
to have done that. That was consider by the media to be very
strong because he actually criticized a Jew in public. Let's
get real. Sharon does not want peace. His power is based in this
conflict. If it ended he would be an also ran.
June 11, 2003. Of course the Palestinians sent a suicide bomber
the very next day. He blew up a bus load of people killing 16
and wounding several others. To get through security he was disguised
as a Jewish fundamentalist. Some strange war this is where even
a jew can't tell an arab from a jew. Of course Israel counter
attacked with a couple of air attacks on Gaza. And so it goes.
Day after day the violence continues.
Happy road map George. You were a fool to even attempt this.
You ask, "What alternative is there." I would respectful
suggest, just cut out the hypocrisy. Get honest and tell the
truth. There can be no peace because neither side wants peace.
What we can do is stop supplying Israel with the weapons of murder.
They are using American weaponry to do that. We supply them based
on the nonsensical notion that Israel is our ally. They are not
and we should not supply them. Then we should get other countries
to stop supplying the Palestinians. If Abraham's children insist
on fighting, let them. Just don't supply them with weapons.
FBI:
These FBI folks know who mailed the Anthrax. They know it was
Steven Hatfield so they don't need to follow up any other leads.
They will just keep after this guy until they get him. Ruby Ridge,
Waco, Atlanta, and they keep right on. I think what we need in
the FBI is some real investigators.
Blackmail Federal Style:
It seems Larry Craig of the Senate is holding some Air Force
promotions ransom to force the Air Force to send some aircraft
to his home state. These are promotions earned by our service
men in combat situations. Craig is saying tough crap for them.
I have blackmail power and I will use it. In theory the Senate
has an ethics committee. I wonder what they do when they are
not hiding under a blanket.
Bridges:
There has been a lot of twaddle and almost religious nonsense
written, sung, and spoken about the Golden Gate Bridge. It seems
this thing has been allowed to deteriorate and much of the nostalgic
twaddle would have us sad because the bridge may be lost. We
are asked to help out, with money of course. Let's get real.
However marvelous the engineering feat, bridges are structures
with a purpose. The purpose of a bridge is to connect two land
masses to facilitate travel.
The Golden Gate Bridge was also built to facilitate travel.
It purpose was to connect two land masses on opposite sides of
the San Francisco Bay. People use that bridge every day to get
from one side to the other of the bay. I do not use that bridge.
I occasionally use the Big Mac in Michigan. When I do I pay a
toll toward the maintenance of that bridge.
The Golden Gate bridge authority, whoever they are, has failed
in the task of maintaining the bridge. I do not feel compelled
to make up their shortfall. If the bridge is indeed falling down,
two things should happen. First the bridge authority, whoever
they are, should be brought to account. The words misfeasance
and malfeasance come to mind, one of them at least. As to maintaining
the bridge, if the people who use it really need it, they will
not let it fall down. They will ante up the necessary toll.
