October 6, 2003:

More Intrigue:
It seems someone in the Bush administration leaked the name of an CIA agent, putting her life at risk. George feigns ignorance of course. It turns out that the agent is the wife of former UN ambassador Joseph Wilson. It seems he had the audacity to criticized the president. He is also the star witness against Bush's lies about the Iraq Africa uranium deal. Really coincidental that his wife was fingered, don't you think.

Now everyone is looking for a goat. There is a full scale criminal investigation. The probe is sure to be bungled because it is being spearheaded by the FBI. The Democrats have noticed that the FBI and the Justice Department work for Bush. They would like to see an independent counsel doing it. Since it was George's boys who got Clinton, they would like equal opportunity. Can we blame them?

Robert Novak is the guy who broke the story in the Times. I though revealing the name of an federal agent was a crime. I thought George's father made it so. Did Novak commit treason? I think so, but who else committed treason? Maybe it's alright if the government does it. What do you think? It don't change much from week to week. Does anyone care?

James Yee:
It seems this guy may actually be an enemy. Here is what we said in the last Weekly Notes. This guy seems to be the latest target of Rumsfeld. He is an American military Chaplain who was sent to minister to the prisoners in Guantanamo. It seems he did that. Now he is accused of being a terrorist. Do you suppose he really is? Do you suppose he just treated those lost souls like human beings? Could that be construed as aiding and abetting our enemies?

I stand corrected. It turns out that the army is a bit careless about how it appoints chaplains. They just take the word of his school about his fidelity and qualifications. It's true for all chaplains. Well, this guy was trained by a pseudo religious organization that receives its funding from Saudi. I think by now everyone knows that Saudi is the major source of terrorism in the world, though George would deny that. Pretty much all of the money and all of the terrorist recruits come from Saudi. What more do we need to know? Is it really possible that the Prince is ignorant of all this? I don't think he is, nor is Bush.

Now, the authorities have also arrested several other people who were working at Guantanamo. Some were interpreters. All were sent there by our military, ostensibly to serve the American purpose. We can wonder if the army was as careless in selecting these people as they were in selecting chaplains. Perhaps all of these people really are spies. If so, where else has our military placed foreign spies? Who can we trust?

All of this noise should not obscure the other facts. We still do not know why these people are being held in Guantanamo. We still don't know what's being done to them or why. Nothing has changed for them since they have been put there. I suspect that most of them will die there.

Computer Software:
The software industry counts on people imposing on their friends and relatives to make their junk work. For example, there are many ordinary people who would not have a clue of how to install and get the Norton Utility stuff to work. There is no way that my sister could do that, nor could her husband. There is no way my wife could do that. I know hundreds of people with computers who could not make that stuff work. What do they do? They call their son-in-law or someone who is expert in computer technology and impose on them. The software industry counts on that. They market dysfunctional poorly documented software to people who cannot possibly make it work.

They claim that they offer technical support for their customers. That is not true. Their technical support is just as incoherent as their software. It is only technical support for highly skilled technicians. I am a highly skilled technician and I have difficulty making this stuff work. The truth is, they know this. That is just the way they do business. It is gross dishonesty. So what else is new? It don't change much in the software industry.

Art:
The Flint Institute of Arts has had their grant money from the state of Michigan cut in half. It went from $400,000 to $200,000 bucks this year. The director was thoughtful about it. He reasoned that it is in the long term interest of the institute to have a viable economy in the state. That, he thought, is more important that this years grant. It was refreshing to here him speak.

Many so called art outfits that get grants from the government are whining like cur dogs. "They took our money away. That's mean. What will we do?" Well. let me weigh in on that. Whose money is it? It is not their money. It is taxpayer money. They never should have got it in the first place. In my humble opinion, when the government supports are, it puts them in the position of being arbiters of art. They are, in fact, deciding what is and is not art. No one is qualified to do that, least of all a bureaucrat. I don't want my tax money being used to support art of any kind. Support of art is a private matter. Government support of art is way outside the government franchise.

Do Not Call:
It's getting comical. The government is demonstrating its incoherence. The list was created by the Federal Trade Commission but it mist be enforced by the Federal Communication Commission. Or is it the other way around? At any rate, by law, the people who created the list cannot give it to the people who must enforce the list. Classic, just classic. It don't change much for decade to decade.
