November 17, 2003:
Dean:
He seems to be the Democratic front runner. Of course, he doesn't
have a great deal to compete with. By and large, they are the
same bunch of windbags that seem to run over and over again.
The faces may look different, but the BS is the same. Dean has
elected to do without the federal grant money. That is an amazing
ethical position if he maintains it. I'm impressed in spite of
myself. We have yet to see what his complete ethic will be. We
can always hope.
Guantanamo:
The Supreme Court has decided to hear arguments for the rights
of the 600 or so POW's there. I am surprised. I did not think
they would even consider it. This is at least a start though
we don't know how they will rule. Let us not forget that it is
still a partisan Republican court.
The Sniper Trials:
The kid is pleading insanity as a defense. What nonsense. This
kid is eighteen years old. He knew what he was doing. He knew
when he pulled that trigger a human being would die. Premeditated
murder is by definition insane. If insanity is a valid defense
they should just open all of the death row cells and let them
all out. They are all insane.
The Weeks Merge Together:
Nothing happened this week that was very different from last
week. Kids are still getting killed in Iraq. Eighteen Italians
got it this week. The White House is still oozing the same kind
of rhetoric as last week. Lansing is still unresponsive. The
media is producing the same inane twaddle. Nothing much changes
from week to week.
Michigan Again:
A kid was expelled from one of our schools. His crime? He had
a toy gun in the school parking lot. Zero tolerance don't you
know? A kid is expelled for bringing a real gun into school.
Another kid is expelled for playing with a toy gun outside. The
administration can't tell the difference between silliness and
a potential felony in progress. Was the kid silly? Sure! What
about the administrators? Were they stupid? Did they overreact?
Are they sick and cowardly? I think so. the kid is probably better
off being out of a school run by a fascist dictator. He could
probably learn more on his own on the internet. Maybe he will
become the next Buckminster Fuller.
Stem Cell Research:
The Jews are doing it in Israel. Christopher Reeves went there
to look into it. He has a compelling reason to look into anything
that could let him walk again. We don't do any original research
on that forbidden subject here in the good old, land of the free,
United States of American. It's against King George's religious
convictions so it is against King George's law. Never mind that
it is the most promising field of medical research in the history
of man. Never mind that it could save countless lives and prevent
massive suffering. King George does not like it. Let the Jews
get the work done and get the patents and the profit from leading
edge medical technology.
Lynch:
She is telling the truth about her ordeal and to some extent
contradicting the army's media spun mythology surrounding her
captivity and rescue. I like her. She's got more integrity than
an army General. She's got more courage than the chief of staff.
Rumsfeld:
Live and learn. I did not know or had forgot that he was involved
in the Nixon Ford administrations. It seems he helped cover up
some American army atrocities in the Vietnam war. After many
years, some old soldiers of Tiger force are talking. I hope they
keep it up. There is nothing would please me more that to see
Rumsfeld fall from grace. George Bush must have known about this
when he brought this bag of stuff into his administration. They
probably thought they could keep it quiet for a few more years.
Betrayal of Trust:
We need special penalties for lawbreaking that includes betrayal
of trust (BOT). That is a situation wherein persons who are charged
with some position of advising or caretaking use the power and
cover of that position for criminal activity. Police, bankers,
corporate executives, and Wall Street traders come to mind. Any
crime by a police officer is by definition a BOT. We can make
charges against most criminals just as always. For example breaking
and entering is B&E. However, if a cop does a B&E the
charge becomes B&E with BOT. In this case, the penalty would
be automatically tripled upon conviction.
Savagery:
Wherever there are men, no matter how civilized they appear,
savagery is the constant companion that lurks just beneath the
surface. Civilized behavior is never more than a thin veneer
over the brute. One need only witness the celebration following
a university sports championship to grasp that. Universities
are centers of civilization, right?
Alabama:
I'm going to have to rethink my position on that state. They
are not all neanderthals after all. The ethics people decided
to fire Moore. He is, as he should be, out of a job. He broke
the law, betrayed his trust, and they fired him. Good! He should
also be disbarred. He should never again have anything to do
with law. We can expect him to declare for governor or senator
in a few days, very much in the tradition of that other notorious
slapstick comedian from Alabama, George Wallace. Then we will
see if the people of Alabama have evolved or not.
