December 1, 2003:

The French get Sillier:
The current Jock of France, prime minister or some such, is trying to get everyone to stop smoking there. He is raising the tax on ciggibutts. I suspect it will bring more revenue, but it won't stop people from smoking. Of course, the tobacconists went on strike and closed their shops. What else? The smokers went out with their autos and blocked the streets. It will blow over and the French people will continue to smoke.

Porn:
Sixty Minutes did a big piece on this. They pointed out that it is a multibillion dollar industry. Crap, I thought everyone knew that. I think sex has always been the most consistently profitable business in the world since Sodom and Gomorrah. Ashcroft and other law enforcement fools are going after these smut peddlers. It is as though prohibition never happened and we didn't learn anything from it. They still have it in their heads that they can legislate and enforce morality. How can they even think they can make a case when the greatest examples of immorality occur in the marble halls of Washington? Does anyone remember Monica? How about the Patriot Act and civil rights? What about Nuke-em-Newt? How about incarcerating people just because they are arabs? Get serious, John.

As far as porn is concerned, there is and always has been a market for it. It's the same as Marijuana. So long as there is a market, there will be suppliers, legal or not. I am a publisher. I could be a supplier of porn if I wished. I know the game. If I did that, I could become a billionaire, but what would I tell my grandchildren? I have a conscience. I have done some dumb things, but it would be impossible for me to behave as depraved as that. This is not true of the people who create, sell, and buy porn. They have no conscience. We cannot change that with laws or with enforcement. If people choose to be filthy scum they will be filthy scum.

We have become a nation of voyeurs. It's not just smut. Take a look at television. It is created specifically for people with the voyeur mentality. The only thing that has a chance of changing that is an ethical government setting the example of ethical behavior. Then we could create an educational system that would guide our kids away from that kind of behavior. Yeah, right!

Where's the Money?
This is another one from sixty minutes. In the Gulf war (remember that?) some American service men were taken prisoner and tortured by the Iraqis. When they were released they came home and sued Iraq and Hussein. They won a big settlement. Then they tried to collect from the frozen assets of Iraq in America. Guess what happened instead? George took the money. He is going to give it to Iraq. Ain't that swell? The final irony? The government is moving to have the veteran's judgement set aside completely. As I said, it don't change much.

Washington:
The legislature has reformed Medicare, so they say. Whenever you hear the word reform coming from Washington you can know one thing for sure. Someone is going to get screwed! In this case it will most likely be those seniors, including me, who already have a good insurance plan with drug copay built in. They will most likely lose their plan and get forced into a slimy evil Republican recommended HMO. They will lose most of their drug benefits. The feds are going to steal 400 million bucks from the taxpayers for this and they are giving a large part of that to the HMO's whose pockets they are in. That's what I believe. Please prove I'm wrong. Bush is taking credit for this massive boondoggle. Perhaps it will cost him the senior vote. We can hope for that.

Remember Yee:
He is the Chaplin who was arrested at Gitmo and charged with espionage. It turned out, as is common with the feds, that they did not have a case. They released him, but to cover their dishonesty they trumped up some other charges. They charged him with adultery and with having porn on his computer. If they could prove that, why is he free? It's a lie. They have nothing. It don't change much with the feds. Dishonesty follows dishonesty like a string of cheap beads.

George's Secret Trip:
George took a secret trip to Iraq on Thanksgiving day for dinner with the troops. It was a courageous thing to do. There are some soured mean spirited politicians who are saying it was all a political move. So what? Everything George does is political. We have not had anything near a statesman in the White House since Harry. The Congress won't allow it. It was still a good thing. It was good for our troops and good for Iraq. Let's be honest about this. I don't usually approve of George, but he still deserves credit when he gets it right. Good move George!

Hussein's Thugs:
They are going nuts. They are indiscriminately attacking and killing everyone. They are killing people who came there to help them. Eventually that will cost them any support they may have had. It shows what they really are. Insane killers. Soon they will have no support and no place to hide.

Bad Move George:
Now George's goons are threatening Americans who travel to Cuba. Of course, George did not begin the embargo against Cuba. He is simple continuing and intensifying it long after any reasonable justification for it. There was a time when the embargo seemed reasonable. This was when Russia was mucking around in the Western Hemisphere. The Russia that did that no longer exists for crap's sake. The Justification for beating up on Cuba has long since passed.

We have real enemies in this world. The Cubans are not our enemies. They could be our partners if we could only become rational about their government. It's their government, not ours. They will change it when Castro kicks the bucket. That's soon enough. It's not hurting us. I get really angry when an idiot administration lets a bunch of two-bit cowardly rabble-rousing Cuban ex-patriots determine American foreign policy. If they want to change the Cuban government they should go back to Cuba and do it themselves. They will not because they are cowards. That's why they ran away in the first place. That's why they want us to do it. This is all political. It's about votes for Jed and George. That's all!

Ps. I know his name is not Jed. It's just that every time I see him or hear abut what he's doing I think of the Beverly Hillbillies.
