More on Y2K: Back to William's Archives.

Have you ever experienced this? A person says to you, "What do you think about this ???????"
You consider for a moment and try to give a thoughtful response. Before you get out half a sentence, the person interrupts you and starts shouting their opinion. Then you realize, they didn't really want to know what you thought at all. The just wanted to express their opinion. This happened to me recently on the Y2K issue. It did not bother me too much because it's a rather common human behavior pattern. It did, however, start me to thinking about the Y2K issue again.

One of the things I did not think of when I made the list of items to prepare for Y2K is medication. Many of us are on regular prescription medication. Even those of us who are not, usually use over the counter preparations of some kind. The important thing is to make sure you have an adequate supply before January 1, 2000. This information came from an American Red Cross list which I found in the April 6, 1999 issue of PC Magazine.

Red Cross also advises us to top off all our vehicle fuel tanks a few days before December 31. The rest of their list pretty much matches my list which I posted a few weeks back. If you want more information from red cross, here is their url. "http://www.redcross.org/disaster/safety/y2k.html"

Here are some other links which I found in the same PC Magazine. I did not have time to check them all out, so you are on your own.

http://www.yardeni.com
http://www.y2kprep.com
http://www.house.gov/reform/gmit/y2k/ This is the fed's site. Do you like that "gmit"? Sounds almost like gum it.

Other useful things I found in PC Magazine are some places to get testing programs and patches for your home PC.

For windows 95 or 98, PC Magazine offers a compliance test. The web address is
http://cgi.zdnet.com/zdy2k/y2k.pl

For windows patches and information, the Microsoft web address is
http://www.microsoft.com/y2k

If you are running quicken for your bookkeeping, check out the fixes at
http://www.intuit.com/support/year2000.html
You will have to know which version you are using. To do that, launch the program and click on help - about quicken. This version information procedure is not just for quicken. It is true for all programs I have checked.

Almost all of the software and hardware people have Y2K pages at their web sites. It may behoove you to check the ones for the hardware and software you have. You can find a number of links on the Wesoomi weblinks pages. For others, check the package your stuff came in, if you still have it. Additionally, some software will have the url listed somewhere in the program. As a last resort, I have sometimes found web sites simply by guessing what their url ought to be. Ask the question, "If I were putting up a web site for this product, what would I call the site?"

One final good idea from PC Magazine. Have a radio which operates on batteries along with a supply of batteries.
